Basketball Prep Spring Program

Due to the great response with over 120 kids participating in the fall and superior success of the School Prep Program, we have decided to expand it into the spring for the truly serious basketball player who hopes to play school ball and has the desire to make their varsity team in the future.   As in life there are no guarantees, but if you really want your child to have a leg up on the competition this course will give them that.

Fee’s include:

  • 9 weeks of classes that will cover approximately 27 hours which also will include conditioning, skills, intense training and game play on Saturdays.
  • Reversible PSA basketball jersey.
  • Former college coaches, college players, elite club coaches and some school district coaches are on staff.
  • Evaluation at beginning and end of the course based on the skills you will need to demonstrate at your school tryout.
  • Mock tryouts.

PREP COURSE:

  • 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th grade.
  • Boys and girls who want to improve and who want to make their school team.
  • Basic skills that they will have to perform at their tryout.  We will show them these skills in a variety of drills that may or may not be done at their school but the skills will be needed.  All coaches do things a little different as far as the drills they use but the skills and concepts are all the same.
  • Key tips on what can impress a coach in a mass tryout that will help them stand out.
  • The one hour practice during the week is designed to work on individual player skills and conditioning early on.
  • The Saturday practice will be a two hour practice that will stress team drills and concepts along with scrimmaging.  The scrimmages will be officiated like real games so they can see what they can and can’t do.
  • The practices will provide them the ability to understand concepts and designs of basketball plays both offensively, defensively and in pressing situations. Just being able to run these drills and plays will give them a leg up on the competition.
  • This program is not for beginners and only serious players should enroll in this class. Along with drills and skills, your child should expect to be able to handle rigorous conditioning associated with basketball tryouts.
  • This will be an intense learning experience and the players will be evaluated as the class goes along.
  • Your athlete can increase their chances of making their school teams by doing this class not only in the spring but the fall session which leads right up to tryouts.
  • Based on survey results we have had over an 80% success rate of athletes making their team after participating in this program.
  • The spring is also our first time offering this to 6th graders so they can have an opportunity if they want to do this class twice leading up to their first school tryout.
  • We understand conflicts will occur.  Classes can be made up if you miss your night during the week.

School Basketball Tryout Program Director

Craig Sklar is the director of this program and has over 20 years of high school coaching experience. Coach Sklar was the Head Coach at the Episcopal School of Dallas for five years and now serves as the lead assistant and Head JV coach at Cistercian Preparatory School where his teams have won almost 90% of their games over the last 10 years. His understanding of middle school athletes carries over to his son’s team which has participated in PSA’s basketball league in which his team has won 4 titles and been to the finals in all 5 years of play.  The team just finished 5th in a national tournament this summer out of 86 teams.

Craig has worked with PISD middle school coaches in his role as camp director for PSA and has a unique understanding of what they will be looking for when players try out.  He also runs skills clinics for PSA year round and is responsible for doing the new coaches orientation for PSA.

Coach Sklar will be joined by a capable staff of coaches who bring a wealth of experience and expertise in working with young athletes and have the ability to bring the best out of them.  Some of these coaches will be from local school districts and some of the best club coaches in the area. The staff will also include former high school and college players who know what it takes to make a team at the highest level.
