Fall Tryout Prep Program 2017

ELITE BASKETBALL Program: 5TH AND 6TH GRADE BOYS AND GIRLS

This class is designed for 5th and 6th grade boys and girls who want to start preparing early for their chances of making their middle school teams. In this class your athlete will be drilled on the fundamentals during a week night session that will get them ready for the more advanced techniques needed for middle school.  We will show them these skills in a variety of drills that may or may not be done exactly the same at their school, but the skills we teach will be needed.  All coaches do things a little different as far as the drills they use but the skills and concepts are all the same.  They will be given key tips on what can impress a coach in a mass tryout that will help them stand out. The Saturday sessions will combine team practices some weeks and two officiated games the other weeks. The practices will provide them the ability to understand concepts and designs of basketball plays both offensively, defensively and pressing situations. Just being able to run these drills and plays will give them a leg up on the competition. This program is not for beginners and only serious players should enroll in this class. Along with drills and skills, your child should expect to be able to handle rigorous conditioning associated with basketball tryouts.  There also will be times where the coaches will push the kids harder than they are use to as this is what they should expect at tryouts.  Realize your child will have to compete against upwards of 60-80 kids fighting it out for 20-24 spots for two teams (10-12 kids on each team) in Plano and in Allen I have heard there could be over 100 kids fighting for 30-36 spots on three teams (10-12 kids on each team).  This is what they need to be doing to give them the best chance to achieve the goal they have chosen.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

This program will be about skills, drills, team concepts and actual team plays. The class will start on Saturday, September 9th and will end Tuesday, November 7th.  You will get to select a one hour class on a Monday or Tuesday night that will be your class every week.  Your choices will be from the following; Monday nights at 5:00, 6:00 or 7:00 pm OR on Tuesday nights at 5:00, 6:00 or 7:00 pm.  Then everyone from all six of the weeknight classes comes in for 2 hours each Saturday from 10:00 am-12:00 pm.  Here is what your choices will look like:

You will choose 1 of these class options;

Monday 5:006:00pm and Saturday 10am- 12pm or

Monday 6:007:00pm and Saturday 10am- 12pm or

Monday 7:008:00pm and Saturday 10am- 12pm

Tuesday 5:006:00pm and Saturday 10am- 12pm or

Tuesday 6:007:00pm and Saturday 10am- 12pm or

Tuesday 7:008:00pm and Saturday 10am 12pm

This will be an intense learning experience and the players will be evaluated as the class goes along.  Your athlete can increase their chances of making their school teams by doing this class because they will be actually working on basketball skills for 27 hours during this class.  We have had over an 80% success rate of athletes making their teams who have come out to this program based on survey results.

This class is the first of its kind for this age group here at PSA and we are only taking the first 40 kids that sign up so don’t delay in signing up. Our classes last year for the middle school kids sold out in the fall with 160 kids.  We cannot take a waiting list based on our court availability so get in early. We will look to separate the 5th and 6th graders if possible but we do not restrict who can sign up. We will also look to place kids on courts where their skills will have a chance to improve so we don’t just look at age or gender.  Weeknight classes will only be drills and conditioning so it does not matter which time slot you select.

As in life there are no guarantees but if you really want your child to have a leg up on the competition this course will give them that.

PROGRAM DIRECTOR AND STAFF INFORMATION: THIS APPLIES TO BOTH CLASSES.

School Basketball Tryout Program Director

Craig Sklar is the director of this program and has over 25 years of high school coaching experience. Coach Sklar is the Head Coach at Cistercian Preparatory School where his teams have reached the playoffs every year he has been head coach. His understanding of middle school athletes carries over to his son’s team which has participated in PSA’s basketball league in which his team has won 4 titles and been to the finals in all 5 years of play.  His club team won the Prime Time National Tournament for the 9th and 10th grade division in which 109 teams were entered.  He has worked with PISD middle school coaches in his role as camp director for PSA and has a unique understanding of what they will be looking for when players try out.  Coach Sklar will be joined by a capable staff of coaches who bring a wealth of experience and expertise in working with young athletes and have the ability to bring the best out of them.  Some of these coaches will be from local school districts and some of the best club coaches in the area. The staff will also include former high school and college players who know what it takes to make a team at the highest level.
